Hijacked Airwaves, A Wounded Trooper, And A Deadly Tunnel Chase

Published by Weazel NewsAll stories

An attacker seized Blaine County's emergency radio frequencies as cellular service collapsed across the region. Hours later a state trooper was shot, a wrong-way pursuit tore through the Braddock Tunnel, and the suspect lay dead. Investigators still cannot say whether Whizz Wireless was hacked or simply failed.

A single individual hijacked Blaine County's emergency radio network on the evening of July 6, flooding mutual-aid frequencies with feedback, shouting and high-pitched tones as cellular service failed across the region, according to an official account released this week by the Blaine County Sheriff's Office and the San Andreas State Patrol. The night ended with one trooper shot, a suspect dead, and a countywide investigation that authorities say is still open.

The Sheriff's Office described the breach as a deliberate attack on the county's communications backbone. For hours, officials said, first responders across Blaine County were unable to rely on the radios that coordinate every fire call, medical run and traffic stop in the region.

Investigators say an unknown individual gained access to the county's radio infrastructure and broadcast disruptive noise throughout the night, severely degrading emergency communications at the moment they were needed most. Personnel from multiple agencies reported being unable to transmit or receive clearly on shared channels.

The interference did not arrive alone. Widespread cellular outages were reported across the county at the same time, and officials acknowledged they have not yet determined whether the two events were connected.

"Investigators are working to determine if the outage was a coordinated cyberattack — or a standard service failure related to local infrastructure." — Blaine County Sheriff's Office statement

Residents and some responders have openly questioned whether the outage was the work of a sophisticated attacker or simply the carrier failing on the worst possible night.

With radios compromised and phones down, Sheriff's Office leadership abandoned normal remote coordination and physically relocated to the temporary County Dispatch Center in Grapeseed to establish a command structure and begin tracing the rogue signal. Working alongside dispatch technicians, investigators reconstructed communications on the ground and set out to locate the source of the transmissions.

The effort narrowed the origin of the interference to a residential property on Marina Drive in Sandy Shores.

In what officials described as coincidence, San Andreas State Patrol troopers were already en route to that same address to investigate a 911 hang-up. Authorities later determined the call had been dialed accidentally by the suspect.

As troopers arrived at the Marina Drive residence, they were met with a heavy barrage of gunfire. One trooper was struck during the initial exchange. The Sheriff's Office confirmed the trooper survived and is expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect fled the home, entered a vehicle waiting in the driveway, and led Sheriff's deputies and state troopers on a pursuit across multiple county roads. The chase moved onto Route 13, where the suspect drove northbound at high speed directly into oncoming southbound traffic.

The pursuit entered the Braddock Tunnel, where the suspect's wrong-way driving caused a severe collision with oncoming civilian vehicles. Following the wreck, officials said, the suspect engaged law enforcement and was shot by state troopers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Despite the speed and the wrong-way traffic, the Sheriff's Office reported that no civilians were seriously injured in the tunnel collision. While officials say the immediate threat has been neutralized, they stressed the case is active and open. Detectives are pursuing leads to establish whether the suspect acted alone or whether accomplices assisted with the communications breach or the events that followed.
